"Architect's drawing of new Customs House planned for the Civic Center -- Building will cost $36,000,000 and will be eight stories with 28 acres of floor space. -- $36,000,000 plans ok'd -- Work to start January 1 on Custom House -- Plans for the Federal Government's $36,000,000 customs house and office building, to be erected in the Civic Center, have been approved by the City Planning Commission with construction to start about January 1. -- The plans disclosed a massive, eight-story building to contain 1,207,117 square feet, or 28 acres of floor space. Construction is expected to take more than two years. -- It will be on Los Angeles Street covering the entire frontage from the Hollywood Freeway to the extension of Temple Street. -- As its contribution to the project the city will extend Temple Street, from Main Street east to Alameda Street. -- The whole block between the present Post Office building and the new custom house will be turned into a landscaped plaza. This will be bounded by the Hollywood Freeway, Los Angeles, Temple and Main Streets." -- Examiner clipping attached to verso, dated 3 October 1960.
