Title supplied by cataloger. Photograph caption dated December 27, 1982 reads, "Afghan freedom fighters pray to Allah in front of the Federal Building on Wilshire Boulevard before beginning their protest of Soviet aggression on the third anniversary of the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. The 25 to 30 guerrillas - who have been ordered off the front lines and into American classrooms by resistance leaders - were among more than 350 protesters who came from Los Angeles, San Francisco and San Diego. Organizers of the demonstration emphasized that the guerrillas are not fighting a religious war, but for the freedom of religion in their country, and compared the struggle to the U.S. Revolutionary War. Guerrillas at the rally expressed confidence they one day will rid their country of occupation forces. "We are confident we will succeed," said one guerrilla. "Our numbers have increased, our weapons are better," said another, sent here to study medicine. The rally was sponsored by the Islamic Association of Afghan Students."
