Description
Photograph of a drawing by Alexander F. Harmer of construction of the first Santa Barbara mission, ca.1898-1900. At left, two Franciscan priests supervise the labor of several dozen Indian men and women. The priests are wearing the traditional Franciscan habit, and the Native Americans are wearing their native costumes. The monk at left appears to be showing two Native Americans a design or piece of cloth. To the far left, a group of Native Americans are shown near a pile of tiles. In the background at left, a group appears to be working with rods and branches. Numerous individuals toil on various tasks at center. In the extreme background at center, a group of at least six Native Americans stand on the incomplete roof of a building adjoining the church. The completed church topped with a cross can be seen at right.
