Description
California Audiovisual Preservation Project (CAVPP)
Cambodian Dancer profiles Chea Sok Lim, survivor of Pol Pots Killing Fields and director of the A Cambodia Youth Dancers. Now a social worker in a poor Santa Ana neighborhood, he has taken on the task of passing Cambodian dance tradition on to neighborhood youth as a means of keeping them out of gang activity at the same time. Also profiled are master flutist Inn Ponn who escaped Pol Pots torture by playing a flute made from a bicycle frame and who is revered in his Long Beach Camobodian community where he teaches the traditional music to children; and Chantara Nop, a poet who recites The Promise, a poem dedicated to his late father. The poem reflects the struggle Cambodian immigrants to adjust to life in the very foreign country of America.
