Civic Auditorium as the principal shelter site The Civic Auditorium was the principal shelter site for the first five days after the October 17, 1989 earthquake. The Civic had generator power, water, and Red Cross-provided food. It was also the site of the Library's community information service which provided local residents with referrals to appropriate disaster relief services. Library staff also handled calls from worried persons outside the area and helped them to connect with their Santa Cruz friends and relatives. Source of information: Staff
