Two unidentified people chat along Grand Avenue, near the steps of the Watercourt Performance Plaza at California Plaza, as the afternoon sun casts their shadows, as well as that of a barren tree, on the sidewalk. In this photo, several high-rise buildings can be seen in the background, the most prominent is the PacBell Tower. John B. and Donald D. Parkinson built the 448-foot, 17-floor PacBell Tower in 1961, it was known as Pacific Telephone Microwave Tower then. The top of the building is a microwave tower that was used from 1961-1963. Today, it serves 1.3 million phone lines in the 213 area code for foreign long distance calls. PacBell Tower is located at 420 S. Grand and the Watercourt Performance Plaza is located at 350 S. Grand Avenue. Photograph dated March 2000.
