Description
A winning model of a proposed re-design of Pershing Square, created by SITE. The caption reads, the "Magic Carpet" design features an undulating concrete canopy covering Pershing Square's underground garage. SITE's Jim Wines presented this scheme as an "iconic grid" emblematic of the pattern of Los Angeles as seen from the air." Former Mayor Cristobal Aguilar signed Pershing Square into being in 1866. At the time, Pershing Square was called La Plaza Abaja ("The Lower Plaza"), then known as Central Park for many years. However, it was renamed Pershing Square in 1918 in honor of General John J. Pershing. The park was first renovated in 1911; in the 1950s a car garage was built beneath it. The park was eventually redesigned by architect Ricardo Legoretta and landscapist Laurie Olin in 1994. Pershing Square takes up the entire block and is bounded by 5th Street to the north, 6th Street to the south, Hill Street to the east, and Olive Street to the west. Representations of several neighboring buildings are included in the model. Dated April 26, 1986.; For another view of this model, see image 00074348.
