Description
Winner of the first Women's Dipsea Hike, Edith Hickman, running toward finish at Willow Camp (later renamed Stinson Beach). Written on back of photo: "8-32 Willow Winner of the First Girls Race." The race was called a "hike" to escape the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) ban on women's long-distance races. This pioneering women's race drew more entrants than the men's race held in September. Note "Finish Here" banner; for some other Dipsea races a "Dipsea Indians" banner would be hung in this location.
