Description
Typed label accompanying print: Standing, lower left, is owner John M. Freitas, with his young son Robert, seated on a bale of hay. The workmen are Antone Freitas, Antone Furtado, Frank Simas, John Alves, Manuel Freitas, Braze Gonzales, Tony Sereno, and John R. Netto. John M. Freitas, a prune and apricot grower in the Santa Clara of the 20's and 30's, also ran a hay-baling business. This is a photo of his hay-baling rig, powered by horses and manned by eight workmen. A cook-wagon with a cook kept them well fed -- the cook wagon does not show in the picture. They went from hayfield to hayfield in Santa Clara Valley to bale hay during the hot summer months.
