Charles Handy article on the deconstruction of society and the organization, and the future of work life. Handy begins the article discussing the impact of technology and how it has resulted in a class-based and isolated society. He proceeds to talk about how such changes have led to decentralization in the workforce and a reduction in the number of full-time laborers that an organization needs to employ. This reality has led to a shamrock structure in organizations, with each of the three leaves corresponding to a new segment of modern worker division. According to Handy, under this new system of organizations, workers will likely have two careers - jobs with two different companies based on their developed skill sets. However, the individualization of workers and the independence resulting from personal skill development and multiple careers has created what Handy refers to as the pizza society, or the splintering of once strong family, work, and community ties.
