Description
Early image of the San Jose depot of the San Franisco & San Jose Railroads. The depot, shown with a tall chimney, was replaced by another structure in the 1870s. The flat top construction of the railroad cars date the image to be between 1864, when the railroad opened, and 1870. The building on the far left is the freight house, which stood at the site until the 1960s. San Pedro Street crosses the tracks and runs between the two buildings. A steam locomotive, number is unknown, can be seen on the far right. The long consist of baggage and passenger cars is rare, signifying a special event. It is possible that the image was taken on January 16, 1864 during opening day ceremonies for the railroad.
