Description
In March 1981, Lt. José Neftalí Madariaga of the Salvadoran National Guard and his soldiers pose for a photograph in their uniforms and holding their rifles. The officer was trained by Americans in Panama. All soldiers are armed with a Heckler & Koch G3 battle rifle of German design. As told by Richard Cross’s friend Nick Potter, the National Guardsman officer was sitting out of uniform and asking Cross to take his photograph. When Cross agreed, the officer quickly put on his uniform and posed for the photograph, with a group of soldiers in the background. In March and early April 1981, photographs of Lt. Madariaga and the soldiers appeared in the magazines Newsweek, Paris Match, and The Economist.
