Description
"Surgical ward, Blantyre Hospital. European staff in centre". "Nyasaland [Malawi]". Iinterior view of a single story building, beds containing patients line both walls and a number of windows are set into both sides of the building, a chimney breast dominates the far end wall and rises up to the exposed corrugated roof. Medical orderlies stand at the far end and two European nurses work at a table set in the central aisle of the room. ❧ Blantyre Mission was established in 1876 by Henry Henderson (1843-1891) and was named after the birth place of David Livingstone, in South Lanarkshire, and is famous for the ornate church built by Clement Scott. The Blantyre mission also had an excellent reputation for its medical provision. ❧ This image belongs to an album of photographs collected by Dr. Stevenson and includes images from India, China and Africa.
