Description
In response to the spread of organized anti-Semitism in the United States during the 1930s, leaders of Los Angeles' Jewish community formed a special defense organization known as the Los Angeles Jewish Community Committee. The committee later changed its name to the Jewish Federation Council of Greater Los Angeles, Community Relations Committee. The collection documents the committee's efforts to combat prejudice and educate the public through cooperation with both Jewish and non-Jewish groups, from its formation in 1933 through the early 1990s.
Designed to resemble an FBI-issued WANTED poster, this anti-Hitler handbill was distributed by the Hollywood Anti-Nazi League for the Defense of American Democracy in 1938. As was typical of WANTED posters of the day, there are two photos of the criminal in question, one in profile. Hitler stands accused of kidnapping, as "he is holding sixty-five million people in bondage in Germany, and more millions in Austria and Czecho-slovakia" [sic]. The handbill goes on to say: "Six hundred thousand Jews are held for ransom by him and he demands two and a quarter billion dollars." A physical description of Hitler is provided, down to the lock of hair that fell famously on one side of his forehead. Additional crimes are detailed, including the many deaths Hitler was known to be responsible for by this time. The poster sums up: INDICTED BY WORLD OPINION FOR MURDER, AND KIDNAPPING WITH INTENT TO KILL. 14 x 8 in.
