Description
Betty's ancestors were pioneers who settled in San Rafael in 1869. She recounts the journey of her maternal grandfather, John Verdenal, who traveled from St. Louis, Missouri to Placerville, California by covered wagon as a twelve-year-old. At the turn-of-the-century, Betty's father, Thomas Patrick Boyd, served as district attorney for Marin County. A graduate of the University of California at Berkeley, Betty recalls her experience as one of the first women in the securities business, in San Francisco. Also noted are her environmental activities, experience founding the Tamalpais Trail Riders, and volunteering with the Terwilliger Nature Education Center and the Audubon Canyon Ranch.
From 1974 to 1984, Carla Ehat, with partner Anne Kent, and later Genevieve Martinelli, interviewed a broad spectrum of Marin County's long-time residents, from ranchers to politicians, including descendants of early pioneer families. This program was co-sponsored by the Marin County Free Library and the Moya Library in Ross. The resulting archive, consisting of nearly 300 recordings and their corresponding transcriptions, are housed in the Anne T. Kent California Room at the Civic Center branch of the Marin County Free Library.
