Description
Photograph of a birdseye view of Los Angeles between Broadway and Second Street looking northeast from the Third City Hall, ca.1888-1895. The photograph appears to be taken from the Third City Hall tower. A tall, brick, medieval-looking building with spires which dominates much of the lower center of the photograph consists of two structures: on the right, the California Bank Building (built 1887), and to the left, the YMCA (built on or after 1887). Also in the frame are: the Roanoke Building (narrow four-story building with conical roof atop corner oriel, and "Hartford Fire Ins. Co." sign on its side) the Highland Villa (three story white building, in upper middle - built 1886, at Hill Street and 1st Street) and the Bradbury Mansion, which faced Olive Street at 3rd Street (the large Victorian at the top of the Hill Street, just up from the Highland Villa). Legible signs read, "Lockett & Patee Prescription Druggists", "Hartford Fire Ins. Co. / Frank M. Rust Ag't.", and "L. Zinnamon Tailors and Dressmakers / Trimmings". Rolling hills on which no houses have been built can be seen in the background.
