This photograph is contained in one of two volumes by Dobbin titled "Album of San Francisco."
Text written on photo: "Camp Fire Refugees North Beach 1906." There was no refugee camp in North Beach. This view, looking south, is of the Union Iron Works camp. This camp, according to the "San Francisco Relief Survey," was founded on May 9, 1906 and was bounded by Kentucky, Indiana, Mariposa, and 21st Streets. Photo shows the tents and cookstoves of this camp. A soldier is patrolling in the foreground. In the distance, the various water tanks, smokestacks and foundries characteristic of this area can be seen.
