Description
View of the interior of the Orland Library Reading Room with a librarian sitting at one of its tables in Orland, Glenn County circa 1909 Orland Library: Then known as the "Reading Room", when it was located in the Hotel Orland building facing on Walker street. The room had been the hotel bar and part of the mirrored back bar can be seen at the left. The room has most recently been used as "Blackie" Sawyer's campaign headquarters. The librarian seated at the table was either Mrs. Mamie Sayler or her sister, Miss Valerie Magnenat, both of whom served terms as librarian. There were not many books to keep track in those days, but the librarian was occasionally distributed by slightly inebriated (sic) gentlemen who still thought the place was a bar.
