Photograph of a painting by Mrs. Oriana Day (of Boston, Massachusetts) of Mission Carmel, 1834. Spanish soldiers on horseback, ox-drawn and donkey-drawn wagons, and several standing people are in front of the mission which consists of a church with two bell towers flanking the main entry, the cloister, and other buildings. "Copyright 1884. Carmel Mission, from copyrighted painting by Mrs. Oriana Day of Boston, and given here courtesy of Mrs. Florence Rice Gamage of San Francisco, daughter of the artist. Spanish soldiers were quartered here. All buildings except the mission are now in ruins. The mission has been restored." -- caption.
