Photograph caption dated May 22, 1986 reads, "Sheriff's Deputy Carlos Bowers surveys scene of his heroism, neighbor's house where van slammed into garage and caught fire." The van apparently drove through Bower's front yard then careened off the hill into the garage below. Bowers said his neighbors were out of town. Following the 3 a.m. accident, Bowers ran to the van and rescued the occupants, who sustained minor injuries. The exact Los Angeles County location where this accident took place is not available.
