Photograph of two views brought together. On the bottom is a view of the Port of Los Angeles showing fisheries, ships and various buildings of the area. On the top is a group of rather expressive merchant marines outside the local office of Sailors' Union of the Pacific in Wilmington. The Sailors' Union goes back to March 6, 1885, when the Coast Seamen's Union was organized on the San Francisco waterfront by three hundred sailors who were dissatisfied by the wages and conditions. Then in 1886, the Steamship Sailors' Union was organized, which in 1891 merged with the Coast Seamen's Union to form the Sailors' Union of the Pacific. Photo dated July 15, 1946.
