Description
Photographic portrait of Captain Cornelius Jensen, ca.1860-1880. He can be seen from the chest up with his shoulders facing straight ahead. His eyes are turned to the left, and he is wearing a three-piece suit with dark bow tie. He has a white beard and sideburns with no moustache. His wavy graying hair is combed to the right. He was a pioneer in 1848.
Danish sea-captain Cornelius Jensen's crew had abandoned ship in San Francisco for the gold fields in 1848. By 1850, he had met Ygnacio Alvarado and Ygnacio Palomares who had driven cattle north to sell to hungry miners. Jensen moved south and married Mercedes, Alvarado's daughter and the couple eventually settled in Riverside, California, in a house, built by Chinese, Indian, and Mexican labor, combinining the typical Californio style with elements Jensen remembered from his boyhood home on the Isle of Sylt. Jensen was the grandfather of Miss Viola J. Pittam, Riverside, California.
