A sign points to a Calico mine. At its height Calico had 500 silver mines and a population of 1,200 people. During the mid 1890s the price of silver dropped and silver mining no longer remained economically viable. During a present-day tour of a mine at Calico, one can see silver ore so rich that there are gray spots of silver in the rock.
