Description
Dodger Stadium in the Los Angeles area of Chavez Ravine, just north of downtown, is currently the third oldest ballpark in Major League Baseball. Construction began in 1959, it opened on April 10, 1962, and has been home to the Los Angeles Dodgers baseball team ever since. It was designed by architect Emil Praeger and was built by the Vinell Construction Company. The stadium sits on 300 acres and has a capacity of 56,000, with 16,000 parking spaces. The stadium was privately financed by Walter O'Malley with an original proposed cost of $12 million but was finally completed at a cost of $23 million. Dodger Stadium's official address is 1000 Elysian Park Avenue.
Photograph article dated August 6, 1962 partially reads, "They came in cars, buses and taxicabs. They came by the thousands from the San Fernando Valley to Dodger Stadium to join in the special 'Valley Day' festivities and witness the Dodger-Cub doubleheader... More than 8,100 Valley residents took advantage of a special ticket offer through the Valley Times TODAY to attend the Dodgers' doubleheader with the Chicago Cubs." Photograph caption reads, "More than 8,100 Valley residents attended 'Valley Day' at Dodger Stadium - Little Debbie McPherson, 4, Burbank, left, was among those enjoying the Dodger-Cub doubleheader."
