Photograph caption dated January 12, 1959 reads, "Dr. Stuart Ridgway, of Ramo-Wooldridge Division of Thompson Ramo Wooldridge Inc., makes final adjustment on afterburner installed in place of muffler under test car. Afterburner--ling cylindrical tube--is designed to eliminate 90 per cent of smog-causing hydrocarbons and will be tested by Air Pollution Control District beginning Monday. Hydrocarbons are broken down into carbon dioxide and water."
