Description
Photograph of the burial of Sioux Indians after the massacre at Wounded Knee, 1890. A large trench is cut into the ground at left, and the bodies of many Indians have already been piled in. Several bodies are on the ground to the right of the grave. Two white men stand in the grave with their hands on their hips. More armed soldiers are standing on the ground above the trench, all wearing long coats and fur hats to protect from the winter weather. Over one-hundred of the approximately three-hundred Indians killed in this fight were buried in this trench.
