Description
A mother carries her son on her back "horse riding" / uma nori - piggy back- style while her daughter entertains him with some hand puppets of a fox woman and samurai. The inset shows the Inari Shrine at Oji, one of the oldest Shinto sites in the downtown area of Edo/Tokyo. Ancient cypress trees line the roadway where "horse banners" / uma jirushi display the name of "Inari Daimyojin," the deity who is associated with rice fields and protecting the harvest. At left is a statue of a fox, the messenger of the Inari deity.
