Title supplied by cataloger. Rolland Joseph 'Speedy' Curtis was born in Louisiana in 1922. After serving three years in the Marines during World War II, he and his wife, Gloria, relocated from New Orleans to Los Angeles in 1946. Curtis served four years with the Los Angeles Police Department, but resigned from the force in order to pursue both a Bachelor's and Master's degree from USC. He later became involved in city politics, as an associate of Sam Yorty, and later a field deputy to City Council members Billy Mills and Tom Bradley. He was briefly director of the Model Cities program in 1973. Rolland J. Curtis died in his home in 1979, the victim of a homicide. An affordable housing complex on Exposition Blvd. near Vermont Ave. was named in his honor in 1981, along with a nearby street and park.; Marvin Braude served as Los Angeles City Councilman for the 11th district from 1965 to 1997. In 1973, Braude, a former two-pack-a-day smoker, helped draft legislation that would establish smoke-free zones in public spaces such as theaters, bars and restaurants. Councilmember Marvin Braude (right) is pictured in City Hall council chambers shaking hands with Jack R. McClellan who is being presented with a resolution in recognition of his career with the Los Angeles Unified School District "for his years of service to education in Los Angeles, and for bringing to the attention of the entire community the achievements of the school children in the South-Central part of our city." At the time of this event, McClellan was serving as Superintendent of the Elementary Area South. Several spectators are visible in the background. The presentation took place on June 6, 1967.
