Photograph was edited for publication purposes; Title supplied by cataloger. Mr. Blackwell was born Richard Sylvan Selzer in Brooklyn, New York, on August 29, 1922. He was a fashion designer, fashion critic, journalist and radio and television personality. He became best known for his "Best and Worst Dressed" lists, issued annually from 1960 to 2007, and for his Academy Awards fashion reviews. Blackwell worked and lived with his partner Robert Spencer for more than 60 years. He died on October 19, 2008. Photograph caption dated October 15, 1964 reads "Beaded chiffon gown drew audience applause." The article partially reads "Mr. Blackwell, the California couturier who never bores an audience, either with his clothes or his conversation, managed to come up with new fashion show stoppers when he opened his elegant Windsor Square home to press and buyers."
