John Connolly discusses his novel, “Bad Men.” He begins by explaining how he was inspired by folktales and legends that he learned growing up in Ireland. He talks about how he read an article about fortified islands off the coast of Maine and decided to incorporate them into his book. Connolly says that he used stories of his friends, and talks about a woman who had to flee from her abusive husband. He talks about how the Irish don’t have a mystery-writing tradition and that he wanted to be the first. He describes how he sets all of his novels in the United States because he enjoys researching new areas and traveling places. Connolly discusses the difficulties with reproducing the American rhythm of speech. He ends the interview by talking about the work of other Irish novelists.
