Colonel Jaime Flores Grijalva is surrounded by other Salvadoran army officers as he walks in San Agustín, El Salvador, after retaking the town that had been occupied by guerrillas for a couple of days. The officers walk by destroyed buildings and in the background residents look on. The colonel, commander of Third Infantry Brigade in the 1980s and now deceased, is among 32 Salvadoran military officers accused of directing, ordering, or participating in the "Operation Rescate" at the hands of the Atlacatl Battalion that killed almost 1,000 people (half of them children and adolescents) in December 1981 in El Mozote and its surroundings. In January 2018 a Salvadoran court recognized the events as War crimes and crimes against humanity.
