Caspar Ermatinger was born in Berne, Switzerland. Crossed plains to California in 1850 where settled in Sierra County. Worked as butcher in Goodyears Bar and later, La Porte. In 1859 purchased the Mt. Pleasant Ranch from Joachim Duest. Operated as ranch and mountain resort.
