Mayor John D. Butler lays the cornerstone for the new Central Library Building at the dedication ceremony on June 27, 1954. A metal box containing items from the cornerstone of the Carnegie building and material representing contemporary San Diego was placed behind a black granite stone engraved with the names of city officials, architects, library commissioners, the city librarian, consultants and the contractor.
