Photograph caption dated November 22, 1930 reads, "Mendel Lieberman of Los Angeles high school is pictured in center with the trophies he won by placing first in The Evening Herald's eight annual extemporaneous oratorical contest. The trophies are an individual cup and The Evening Herald perpetual trophy. This is the third victory for Los Angeles high and gives it permanent possession of the trophy. Israel Shapiro, left, of Roosevelt high, was second, and Thomas Lambert, right, of Fremont high won third."
