Description
Former Confederate soldier Jack Gunn made his way to the Panamint Valley in Inyo County, California, where he operated the Minnietta Mine in the late 19th century. He used his profits to take his wife and daughter on sumptuous San Francisco vacations. On one of these trips, he heard a Regina music box, deemed by some to produce volume and tone unmatched by any other music box manufacturer. Gunn bought a box and some discs, and arranged for their arduous transport by mule back to his Panamint Valley home. The Gunns later moved the player to their Independence, California home. It eventually came to the Eastern California Museum as a donation. This recording, commissioned by the Inyo County Department of Museums, preserves the sound of the music box, which remains on display in the museum.Additional Descriptive Notes: Originally released by Inyo County Department of Museums; Henry Raub, Director; Independence, California.
