Description
This is a photograph of Fr. Hilbert with his First Communion class. The children are young and appear to be well dressed for the occasion and sitting in rows for the picture.
Born in New York, Fr. Hilbert came to Maryknoll in 1923 and was ordained to the priesthood in 1926. He was one of the first to be assigned to the mission in Kaying, South China. After language study in Siaolok, he was appointed pastor of the parish there. In 1930 he became pastor of Chiuling where he began to build up the new parish. In 1940 he was appointed Vicar Delegate of the Kaying aVicariate and Rector of the Seminary. He worked in the United States and Taiwan in his later years.
