This collection is comprised of approximately 1,000 slides capturing buildings along Wilshire Boulevard. The slides were taken during Tuesday afternoon walks in 1978-1979 by Marlene Laskey and her 15-year-old daughter, Annie, who was the primary photographer. Marlene (1933-1989) was a Michigan native who moved to Los Angeles in the 1950s and became a Los Angeles historian and architecture enthusiast. At the time of her death from cancer, Marlene was working on a Master of Urban Planning degree at UCLA, and was an interviewer for UCLA's Oral History program.; Title supplied by cataloger; The highest resolution available for this image is 300 dpi. Close-up view of the plaque which reads, "Wilshire Boulevard began in 1769 as part of the Portola Trail. In 1895 the portion near Westlake Park was named for H. Gaylord Wilshire, real estate developer. Later, Wilshire Boulevard was extended west to the Pacific Ocean, and in 1950 from Figueroa Street east to Grand Avenue. Grand Avenue was originally named Calle de Caridad or Charity Street by Lt. E.O.C. Ord U.S.A in 1849. Its name was changed to Grand Avenue in 1887 as its residents objected to living on charity. Plaque placed by Standard Federal Savings and Loan Association and the Board of Supervisors of the County of Los Angeles September 22, 1955."
