Description
Biography/History: Glynndana Shevlin has worked for the Disney Hotel for many years and was an active member of HERE Local 681 (now merged with UNITE HERE Local 11). She helped change Local 681’s leadership by electing Ada Briceño as president and by taking a strong role in organizing for better contracts and reaching out to nonunion workers. Glynndana is currently a member of Local 11’s executive board.
Scope/Content: Interview Contents: Childhood in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and St. Louis, Missouri — Experiencing the labor movement as a young adult — Working at a nonunion hotel in Indianapolis, Indiana — Returning to California in 1987 and working as a hostess cashier at the Disneyland Hotel in 1988 — Working with HERE Local 681 — Attending contract negotiations and being elected shop steward — 2008 contract fight with Disney — Transition from a business union to an activist, organizing union — Fighting the false distinction between back-of-the-house and front-of-the-house workers — Change in union culture promoted equality and solidarity among workers inclusive of race, gender, educational background, languages spoken, and immigration status — Political campaigns — Strong women leaders as role models — Clergy and Laity United for Economic Justice (CLUE) and the Orange County Federation of Labor — Rank-and-file workers empowered to stand up for their rights.
