Description
Photograph of a Havasupai Indian man, Manakacha, "Kohot" or chief, ca.1899. He wears a hat with a wide brim, a cloth tied about his forehead, and a vest over a shirt, with trousers and shoes. He has dark shoulder-length hair. He is sitting on a stool or chair outside turned slightly to his left. His head and gaze face the camera directly. In his left hand and draped over his right thigh he holds a long furry striped animal tail (of a raccoon?). Behind him hangs a blanket with a bold zig-zag pattern. Vegetation is visible in the background.
