Description
Title supplied by cataloger.
The Las Tunas Adobe is said to be the oldest house in San Gabriel, presumably constructed circa 1770. This small ranch was formerly known as Las Tunas Rancho and was completely surrounded by a hedge of 'tunas' (or cactus), that the Mission Fathers planted to protect their groves and orchards from the inroads of cattle, hence the name. The grounds of this house contain the first orange seedlings planted in California as well as four olive trees, two pecan trees, a coconut palm, and a lemon-verbena tree, all dating from the orchards of the Friars. The adobe was once owned and used as a residence by Colonel Purcell and his family.
Exterior view of the Mrs. Yervaise Purcell adobe, also known as the Las Tunas Adobe. It was built circa 1770 and was located at 328 W. Mission Boulevard, San Gabriel, CA 91776. Photograph dated 1928.
