Description
Guy Johnson discusses his novel, “Standing at the Scratch Line.” He begins by talking about how he wanted to write about the life experience of African Americans in the early 1900s. He describes how his main character joins an all-black battalion that fights in France in World War I. Martinson asks Johnson to read a passage about a man who is trying to kill his enemies in battle. He also explains that his book is about a couple whose relationship falls apart because they raise other people’s children. He ends the interview by discussing how he is the son of Maya Angelou and talks about what it was like growing up in a literary household.
