Description
Note: "Königin Wbete-Gua Bani mit ihrer Tochter Zaye. Datum ca. 1912." (Ch. M. Geary, Ndam Njoya 1985:119). - "Datum der Photographie ca. 1913, Druck 1916." (Ch. M. Geary 1988: 119,135). - "Kg. Ndj. Frau Mbete u. Tochter. (Wuhrmann, A., 1917. Beschreibung zu den Lichtbildern aus Bamum. E-30-0,6).
Note translation: "Queen Wbete-Gua Bani and her daughter Zaye, dates from c.1912." (C.M. Geary, Ndam Njoya 1985:119). - "Date of photograph c.1913, print 1916." (C.M. Geary 1988:119,135). - K[in]g Ndj[oya s] wife Mbete and her daughter. In the chief s compound his wife Mbete belongs to one of the quiet ones in this country . She has none of the characteristics which would give her the right to be regarded as one the favourite wives. She devotes herself to her little daughter Nzayie, whom she surrounds with wonderful love and on whom she hangs with her whole soul. In Bamum it is unfortunately the case that loving a child means thoroughly spoiling it - and little Nzayie is a despotic figure. Her weak mother allows her to play the tyrant with her. Nzayie is also a pupil in our mission school. She was not very gifted, but hard-working and conscientious. She was always very happy when one praised her. (A. Wuhrmann, 1917, Commentaries to Slides from Bamum, E-30-0,6). - Both persons are wearing imported cloth (PV 02.2002).
