Description
Image shows view looking southeast of the Alpha Syndicate Building (later known as Casa del Portal), and at right the King Neptune marble sculpture in Malaga Cove Plaza. Created by an unknown artist in the 17th century as a copy after the original 16th century bronze fountain by Giambologna, the sculpture was imported from Italy by the collector, Arnoldo Adolfo di Segni in the late 1920s, purchased from him by the Palos Verdes Project and dedicated in Malaga Plaza on February 16, 1930. The sculpture was restored and rededicated in 1969 and 1999. The Syndicate Building was designed by architects Webber, Staunton, and Spaulding. Original occupants of the building included real estate broker I. Lossman (hence the building also being referred to as the Lossman Building), the local Boy Scouts organization, and served as police headquarters under Chief William Woosley. Casa del Portal was the site of the area's first nursery school, and during World War II was served as a Red Cross Center. Front of photo mount is stamped with "padilla" in lower right corner.
