Description
The Baldwin Cottage, also known as the Queen Anne Cottage, as seen from across the four acre Baldwin Lake at Santa Anita Ranch in Arcadia. Built between the years 1885-86 by Elias Jackson "Lucky" Baldwin, the cottage is believed to have been a honeymoon gift for Lucky's fourth wife, sixteen year-old Lillie Bennett. Lillie's father, architect Albert A. Bennett, designed the cottage. After the May-December marriage ended in 1885, Baldwin converted the home into a memorial to the third wife, Jennie Dexter, who had died in 1881. Jennie's likeness can be seen in a stained glass portrait in the front door and in a large portrait hanging in the parlor, both of which remain in the cottage today. Baldwin resided in the neighboring 8-room adobe house, originally owned by Hugo Reid, leaving the cottage to serve as the ranch guest house. It is often assumed that the lake is man-made, but the naturally occurring lake is fed by local springs and artesian wells. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the cottage and lake have appeared in numerous films and television programs, including Fantasy Island, a series which ran from 1978 to 1984.
