Description
Photograph of a Douglas DC-2 plane at Los Angeles Harbor ready for shipment to Australia, 1937. A plane with a covered tail sits on a floating platform facing right. The plane's registration number "VH-UYB" is visible on its side. A small barge can be seen beside it, at left, bearing the words "Case Construction Company Inc." on its side, while another larger boat appears at right, beside a building that reads "N.Y.K. Line". "This DC-2 was imported new for Australian National Airways, Ltd. in 1937, who named it "Pengana". Although it had a mishap in 1939 (it crashed into the Cooks River after overrunning the runway at Mascot Airport in September of 1939), VH-UYB went on to serve faithfully (mainly on the Adelaide - Melbourne route) until it was broken up in January 1948" -- unknow author. http://www.edcoatescollection.com/ac1/austu/VH-UYB.html Compares to CHS-48814 (record ID chs-m24437)
