Description
Historical plaque located in the entrance corridor of Sumner Hall. Plaque reads: "Sumner Hall - In honor of her singular devotion and unfaltering courage during the early years of struggle which gave this college birth and character, this building, since the year 1893, has borne the name of Mary Louisa Stedman Sumner wife of Charles Burt Sumner. Erected in 1887 as a hotel in the prospective town of Claremont and located at that time on the western edge of what is now Marston Quadrangle, this building became the first home of Pomona College in 1889. With repeated additions and modifications it at first housed all the activities of the college, later was the residence and dining hall of the entire student body and then for many years was the sole women's dormitory. The original structure was rebuilt upon this site in the year 1922 by friends of the college who desired to perpetuate the influences here established and made sacred by these associations."
