Photograph caption dated October 17, 1955 reads, "Barbara Payton in court in check case. Preliminary hearing Nov. 2 for Franchot Tone's ex." Payton appears in court before Judge F. Ray Bennett for arraignment on a bad check charge. She is alleged to have cashed three checks for $100, $18 and $11 on Sept. 21 and 24 in a market at 7880 Sunset Blvd.; all of the checks bounced. Payton pleaded guilty to the charges.
