Photograph of the British cruiser HMS Vindictive sunk in the entrance to Ostend harbor to prevent transit by German submarines, ca.1914. The burned hull of the cruiser is at center, between two long wooden piers. Another ship is visible on the ocean in the background. There is a sandy beach in the foreground at right. The Vindictive took part in the raid at Zeebruge and was filled with concrete and sunk at Ostend by British marines.
