Description
A skirt from the Black HMong group in Sayaboury province, Laos. The skirt is made of 3 parts: a white waistband (slightly visible), a middle section made from batik designs, and bottom section made of embroidery and appliqué designs in red, yellow, and white. This style is defined by a white appliquéd band on the bottom edge. Typed label affixed to mat board beneath the photograph reads, "This is an older style skirt, the pleats still stitched in place; you can see the pleating threads hanging down along the edge. Notice that there is much more of the batik showing, not as much colored appliqué[sic]." Date derived from similar prints. Notes on verso read: "Making skirt #14 [handwritten pencil, upper left verso]; HMong: Making A Skirt #7 (Photo 36), Lewis Judy, *HMO.4083.00* Fall 2002 [printed label, 4083 is crossed out, upper right verso]" Original title from SEACRC: HMong: Making A Skirt #14
