Description
A group of passengers standing next to Mt. Tamalpais and Muir Woods Engine No. 9 train at the Double Bow Knot. Insert at bottom left reads "Part of railway advertising agents of the trunk line railways en rout to Tavern of Tamalpais Tuesday, July [indecipherable] 1922". Written on back of photograph: "July 1922 at Double Bow Knot. Volley Thoney, Engr. (Vollmar A. Thoney of Mill Vy)" and "Al Graves collection." Built at the midpoint of the Mill Valley and Mt. Tamalpais Railway, the Double Bow Knot looped back and forth five times to gain elevation without forcing the grade to be steeper than five percent.
